Community profile

Takoma Village Cohousing

Washington, DC

The only cohousing community in Washington DC: forty-three owned townhouses and flats around a green and a paved piazza, a mile or so from the Maryland line. A common house of nearly four thousand square feet holds the dining room and kitchen where the community eats together several times a week, along with a workshop, a laundry and a shared office. Raised beds grow herbs and vegetables, and decisions are made by consensus.

Conditions set by the community
The community is formally a condominium and each of the 43 homes is owned. Decisions are made together by consensus, in membership meetings held about once a month, and residents take part in one or more of the three teams that run the place. A home may be let only while its owner is away temporarily and means to return, and a tenant is expected to take part in the life of the community. Homes are sold by their owners rather than through an agent, and the seller chooses the buyer.

What still needs confirmation

These details are material and Land to Village has not confirmed them. Ask about them before making a decision.

  • What it costs to live here has not yet been confirmed; the community publishes no association fee and no price for a home.
  • Whether a resident is required to take part in the community’s work, or only encouraged to, has not yet been confirmed.
  • The pet policy and any limit on how many people may live in a home have not yet been confirmed.
  • Twenty of the homes are at ground level or reached by a lift, and whether any home is otherwise adapted has not yet been confirmed.
  • Homes are sold by their owners and the seller chooses the buyer, so how long a home takes to come up has not yet been confirmed.

Legal and financial caution

Before you pay anyone anything

A reservation is not the same as a completed or legally occupiable homesite. Review refund terms, agreements, approvals, financing, site rent, and projected dates independently before paying money.

Land to Village never collects deposits, investment, membership payments, or purchase commitments, and never holds money on behalf of a community or a group.
